Meet Sustaira: Jeroen!
Here at Sustaira we get to know all of our employees very well and we want you to know them too! For every new team member, we ask them the following questions to learn about who they are and why sustainability matters to them. Today, we introduce Jeroen Baars. Read Jeroen’s interview below and enjoy!
Jeroen’s Interview:
What made you decide to join the Sustaira team?
Sustainability has been a growing part of my life, especially in recent years. In learning more and becoming more conscious about the impact of my actions, a desire grew to contribute to a more sustainable world in my professional life as well. When the opportunity came to do just that, I had to take it.
What is your role at Sustaira?
As a part of the development team, it’s my responsibility to help build intelligent solutions that enable us to better understand our impact on the planet and how we can improve.
What does sustainability mean to you?
For me, sustainability is about awareness and knowledge of how our actions impact others and the world around us. Within that awareness, I think it’s important to not just think about how we can do less bad (which is very important, don’t get me wrong), but also challenge ourselves to think of opportunities to do good, to regenerate. We need to be constantly asking ourselves: how can we create opportunities to positively impact our planet in the ways we do business?
Where do you believe technology meets sustainability in your vision?
Generally speaking, I see two major ways in which technology can help us to live more sustainably. First, it can help us to better understand and get a grip on the impact we’re having on the planet, and how we can keep that to a minimum or even turn it around and being able to regenerate!
Second, technology can also help us to better understand natural processes. I truly believe that nature is fundamentally collaborative, and when something seems adversarial, it means we’re not seeing the full picture. Technology can help us in seeing that picture more clearly and provide input to restore balance or even accelerate natural regenerative processes.
Tell us a little bit about you! Just a couple fun facts or something people may not know. What do you believe people need to know about Jeroen Baars?
I live in Rotterdam with my lovely girlfriend. I like to be active and explore, visiting museums, art galleries and the awesome specialty coffee spots that the city has to offer. On Saturdays, you’ll almost always find me at the farmers market. I enjoy gardening and learning about regenerative practices to grow food and build a habitat for all kinds of amazing creatures in our small city garden.
