JetBlue buys jet fuel made from Captured Carbon Emissions.
Last week news broke that JetBlue along with Britain's Virgin Atlantic signed an agreement with a sustainable fuel start up, Air Company, to purchase fuel made from captured carbon emissions.
Air Company, a startup dedicated to creating products from CO2 has found a way expedite the Fischer-Tropsch process developed in 1925 that produced synthetic fuels. They take the CO2 in liquid form and converted the previously multi-step process into a single step conversion that allows them to create fuel-grade paraffins.
According to their website, Air Company talks about how the aviation industry is the leading contributor to excess CO2 in the atmosphere and the technology behind their sustainable aviation fuel, offers a solution that not only powers aviation, but reduces carbon impacts.
JetBlue has signed to buy 25 million gallons of Air Company’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), called AIRMADE, between 2027 and 2032. Virgin Atlantic will purchase buy to 100 million galls of SAF over the next 10 years.
Directly from the press release SAF is not only going to reduce emissions substantially but can change the trajectory to net-zero for airlines across the globe.
“Currently available SAF offers approximately 80% reduction in emissions per net gallon on a lifecycle basis. AIR COMPANY’s carbon-neutral fuel made from captured CO2 not only takes a step forward, offering an additional 14% reduction for AIR COMPANY or total 94% GHG reduction, but importantly, uses an abundant and freely available resource as a feedstock, negating feedstock constraints. This advancement offers an additional path to achieving commercial viability for SAF at-scale, which will be key to the aviation industry’s net-zero goals.”
Sara Bogdan, Director of Sustainability and ESG at JetBlue, said:
“SAF is one of the most promising avenues for addressing aviation emissions currently available. With creative thinking backed by science, AIR COMPANY’s work to leverage captured carbon, a resource distinct from other SAF feedstocks, represents the kind of innovation that can expand SAF availability and grow the market necessary to reach our industry goals. We’re excited to build upon this partnership established by JetBlue Ventures as we continue our own path to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.”
