Datamaran Survey: Strengthening ESG Oversight

Overview

A recent survey by Datamaran reveals that 71% of companies have enhanced their board oversight of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). This shift signifies a growing commitment to integrating sustainability into corporate governance.

A Strategic Shift in ESG Leadership

The 2025 CSRD Pulse Check Survey by Datamaran highlights a transformative shift in corporate sustainability governance. ESG oversight is now a boardroom priority, with 71.6% of companies conducting regular ESG strategy reviews at the board level. This move from an isolated function to a core leadership priority is essential for long-term success in an era of increasing regulatory and investor scrutiny.

Governance Structures Evolving

Companies are embedding ESG oversight into their leadership structures. The survey found that 62.6% of firms have established dedicated ESG committees, and 32.87% have tied ESG performance to executive evaluations. This evolution in governance structures ensures that sustainability is not an afterthought but a core business priority.

Beyond Compliance: Leveraging CSRD Data

Organizations are using CSRD reporting data for more than just compliance. According to the survey, 80.6% of companies plan to use CSRD data to refine their sustainability disclosures, while 56.7% integrate it into strategic planning and risk management. This proactive approach helps companies strengthen governance and long-term financial resilience.

Key Insights and Opportunities

When asked about the most valuable CSRD insights for decision-making, respondents prioritized key impacts, risks, and opportunities (IROs). However, only 23.8% focus on supplier and partner evaluation, indicating a gap in value chain integration. This highlights an area for potential growth and improvement in ESG practices.

The Datamaran survey underscores a significant shift in how companies approach ESG oversight and governance. By embedding sustainability into their core decision-making processes, companies are better positioned to navigate the complexities of modern business and meet the expectations of regulators and investors alike.
